Fear of the music

September 19, 2008

Music that makes you move with spontaneity is death to the ‘proper’ man – that rational, appropriately reserved, status-conscious, upright man of society. He can move his head to the classics in private, he might tap to jazz and perhaps manage a waltz. But he can think of nothing more base than publicly losing his body and self in enthrallment to the beat of drums or an old rock classic. He deprives himself of one of life’s most incredible experiences. What for? For status’ sake, to avoid shame? Does he not realise that he will die one day? In the context of impending death, status and shame mean nothing. We need to be scared of death to death in order to live life to the full.
