Children: remedy for the afflicted self

What is it exactly that makes young children ‘adorable’?

It is not their tinyness. It is not their wackiness. It is not even their playfulness.

I think it is their innocence; their lack of judgement of themselves and others. Young children have not developed the ‘adult self’. This is both a moral self – knowledge of right and wrong – and an extreme objectifying self. The objectifying self looks at the world ‘rationally’ with a utilitarian, technocratic outlook. It has lost all sense of wonder of things.

The innocence of children gives us freedom to be human: wacky, playful, generous, empathic and loving.

We may all need to spend time with children on occasion in order to revive our selves.
